Gillery's Little Secret (LiquidFilmworks) is one of those independent films that leaves you feeling as though you've been spying on someone's life.
You are immediately and gracefully pulled into the beautifully mysterious story of Gillery's world.
Annabeth Gish (X-Files) stars as Gillery, a woman returning to her hometown. Though she left many years before, she returns and discovers that the secrets she thought she left behind are still there. At least one of the secrets has evolved into a question that demands answering.
This is a film that makes you think about the secrets we have all left behind that await rediscovery. But, it's also about love and how we disguise ourselves to escape from things we should have claimed as our own.
The cinematography is beautiful. Each scene is perfectly matched with its surroundings and adds to the mystery of Gillery's secrets.
This could easily be tagged a great lesbian love story. (move over Brokeback Mountain?) But the film demands more from us than that.
There is more to this story than is told in this short film. Hopefully we won't be left wondering about Gillery, her secret and the relationship she has with her girlfriend. Like all great short films, a full length feature is highly anticipated.
