Listen & Buy

The dZihan Kamien Orchestra
Live in Vienna
Six Degrees Records 2004

Live CDs are sometimes difficult to palate.   Our listening skills have been curtailed to expect studio sound and quality.  Which is probably why the live double albums of the 1970s have been replaced by greatest hits collections with a few new songs thrown in.

Live in Vienna, the new CD from The dZihan Kamien Orchestra (Six Degrees Records), breaks every stereotype of live recordings.  The sound quality is so excellent that you could almost mistake it for a studio recording.

The dZihan Kamien Orchestra creates great club jazz and that doesn’t mean music from your typical jazz club.  This is music you can dance to, or, just sit and absorb.

Live in Vienna is not just about the musicians, there are several guest performances.  The most notable is the second track, Thrill, featuring Ma.Dita.  This haunting song is what Bjork would sound like if she attempted jazz.  It’s amazing.  Ma.Dita is also featured on Drophere.

Homebase is a more traditional jazz tune.   Some outstanding saxophone from Levent Altindag and driving trumpet from Senova Teztel.  (Perhaps all of these names might not mean much to you but after listening to this music you will want to know more about them.)  This track also puts percussionist Sammy Figueroa and drummer Andrew Small right into the ears of the audience.

You will find dZihan and Kamien not just responsible for writing credits but also working guitars, keyboards and piano.

This is a great collaboration of musicians directed by two more intuitive musicians.

A great added bonus to Live in Vienna, is the bonus CD featuring remixes of some of the songs featured in the concert as well as a few others.   The remix CD is worth buying all on its own.  The remixes take this project to another level and open your ears to a different perspective on dZihan and Damien's music.
